I chose Greek mythology for this week's topic because I wanted to include some stories into my blog. I also wanted to include creativity and imagination because that is just what Greek mythology is. In Greek mythology, there are many myths and gods. There are 12 major gods called the Olympians. In Ancient Greece, the Greeks usually and typically worshiped these 12 gods. I will be talking about each of them. Some background knowledge to know before you read this is that the Olympians lived on Mount. Olympus in Greece.
Zeus (Pronounced: Zoos): Zeus is the king of the gods and the eldest of them. He is the god of thunder, justice, and ruler of the sky. His main weapon is the Master Bolt! Dun-dun-dun! The Master Bolt is an amazing bolt of lightning that could create unbelievable explosions. Zeus has two brothers, Hades and Poseidon, who are also major gods. Zeus can get angry pretty quickly. That big thunder storm you see coming? That's probably Zeus anger turning into a great storm. Zeus' symbols are the lightning bolt and the eagle.

Hera (Pronounced: Hair'-ah): Hera is the goddess of families. She is also the queen of the gods and Zeus' wife. She is known to help families and mortal heroes on quests. Her symbols are the pomegranate, lotus, cow, and peacock.
Poseidon (Pronounced: Po-sigh'-dun): Poseidon is the god of horses and water-related natural disasters. He is also the ruler of the sea. Poseidon is the brother of Zeus. Both of them usually have quarrels and fight sometimes. That other big storm you hear? Yup, that's probably Poseidon and Zeus fighting. An amazing thing Poseidon made is the horse. In a Greek myth, Poseidon made horses out of sea foam for a contest. Poseidon's symbols are the three-pointed trident and horses.

Demeter (Pronounced: Duh-mee'-ter): Demeter is the goddess of agriculture. She is the sister of Zeus. She looks over the growing season. In ancient Greek times, she was known to help farmers and gardeners. When her daughter, Persephone, was kidnapped by the god Hades, she did not let any crops grow in anger. This season became to be known as winter. Demeter's symbols are a torch and usually the corn plant.

Ares (Pronounced: Air'-eez): Ares is the god of war. He is also the son of Zeus and Hera. In Ancient Greek times, he usually fought in most wars and battles. In the Trojan War, Ares was on the Trojan's side. Ares' symbols are a bloody spear and a wild boar.

Athena (Pronounced: Ah-thee'-nah): Athena is the goddess of wisdom, battle, and useful arts and crafts. Athena is the daughter of Zeus. She was born full grown and in battle armor straight from Zeus' head. Athena helped the great hero Odysseus, made sure the Greeks won in the Trojan War, and even founded the city of Athens and was made it's patron god! Athena's symbols are the owl and the olive tree.

Apollo (Pronounced: Ah-paul-oh'): Apollo is the god of medicine, music, poetry, prophecy, archery and the god of the sun. Apollo is the son of Zeus and is also the twin of the goddess Artemis. Apollo the god of the sun when the old sun god, Helios retired. Apollo's symbols are the lyre (a musical instrument that is kind of like a mini harp), the laurel wreath, and the sun.

Artemis (Pronounced: Ar'-tem-iss): Artemis is the goddess of the moon, the hunt, and young maidens. Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and the twin sister of Apollo. Hephaestus (Pronounced: Huh-fess-tus): Hephaestus is the god of blacksmiths, craftsmanship, and fire. He is the son of Zeus and Hera and husband of Aphrodite. Hephaestus is known to make wonderful creations with his large hands. In Greek myths, Hephaestus was known to be very ugly. So ugly that his own mother, Hera, threw him off Mount. Olympus. This made it hard to walk for him as his legs were bent in odd shapes. He is very smart though and has lots of forges all over the world. Hephaestus' symbols are the anvil and hammer.

Aphrodite (Pronounced: A-fro-di'-tee): Aphrodite is the goddess of beauty. She is the wife of Hephaestus. She is known to be very pretty. It's hard to describe her because she can change her appearance to whatever you find pretty. Aphrodite actually started the Trojan War. This happened when she made Prince Paris judge her the most fairest goddess of all. When Prince Paris kidnapped a princess, the Trojans were mad and started a war with the Greeks. Aphrodite's symbols are the dove and rose.

He also leads spirits to the Underworld (where you go when you pass away). Hermes is known to wear a winged helmet and winged shoes. He is also known to be extremely fast. Hermes was a big troublemaker when he was a child. He once stole the sacred cattle of his brother Apollo! Apollo was very angry but to make it up, Hermes invented the lyre! Hermes' symbols are the caduceus (the item Hermes is holding below is the caduceus).

Dionysus (Pronounced: Di-oh-ni'-sus): Dionysus is the god of wine. He is the son of Zeus and is the most recently appointed Olympian (recent being billions and billions and billions of years back). Dionysus is known for wearing a leopard skin cape as his sacred animal is the leopard. Zeus was so impressed with Dionysus for inventing wine, that he made him a god. In Ancient Greece, Dionysus mostly spent his time partying. Just because Dionysus is only the god of wine, don't think that he is not powerful. One time, when pirates attacked the ship he was traveling on, Dionysus made them turn insane and then into dolphins. Dionysus' symbols are the leopard and the grape vine.

Hades (Pronounced: Hay'-deez): Hades is not an Olympian, however, he is a major god worth mentioning. Hades is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. He is the god and ruler of the Underworld. He makes sure the spirits of the dead are going to the right places. He is known for kidnapping the daughter of Demeter, Persephone who later became his wife. Demeter eventually forgave him for that incident. Hades sits on a throne of bones and has a special helmet called the helm of darkness that makes him invisible. Hades' symbol is the helm of darkness.
